what is a shift interlock. I was told that it was being overridden what is the cost

My shift would not shift to drive reverse etc. so on the right side of the shifter there was a square hole and I put a screwdriver and it and never had a problem for close to 8 years. I went to get an inspection sticker and got a rejection sticker all these years never had a problem. I was told that my shift interlock has been overridden. HELP

I guess the inspection station needs to have a working shift interlock solenoid. So you've been doing it manually for 8 years? Have a friend or mechanic replace the part for you. Cheap easy fix.
