would the starter cause the car to die when driving its a 97 pontiac grand prix 2 door sometimes when i turn it off it takes about 15 min but it will start and it clicks like a machine gun real fast when trying to start

Once the car is started, the starter no longer is needed by the engine and it's not related to the stalling issue. Have the battery load tested. You might have low voltage. Any local auto parts store will do this for free.
