how much could i find a 1996 pontiac grand prix se motter for hear in the hart of texas or would it just be cheeper to buy a diffrent car

bought a 1996 pontiac grand prix se 3100 v6 its 2door with 213,000 miles and the 2nd
day i was driveing it my oil pump went out and i think i bent a rod or even wors. but i
dont know yet dont want to posibley wast mony to have some one look at it if its just
gona be cheeper to look in to a new car. it ran fine for about 80 miles tell i got to the
nxt town then at the red lights id start to exalirate and it would start going then act like
it was sliping or missing a gear cuz it cut out then it got wors latter that day it just died
going down the rode and wouldent start for awhile let it sit started up just fine but had a
slight knock didnt sound bad my motor was rocking back and forth while runing then
next day took it out once more and did good for about 15 to 20 mins in town then out of
no where same thing happend died out of no where gave no indercators wasnt even
geting supper hot but thats if the temp even works. and one more thing what dose the
2nd gear start button do its located near the drivers left leg near the door and did they
all have it ?

Check the oil on the dipstick. Is there white, milky, "goop" on it? If so it's a blown head gasket. The 3.1 liter V6s are notorious for that. If you have the 3.8 liter (optional on SE models) the intake manifold gasket has probably failed. Since you're hearing a knocking sound I believe coolant has leaked into the crankcase, contaminated the oil and damaged the bearings. Given the age of the vehicle and mileage it's probably not worth fixing. Unless you can get a good used engine cheap. But even then you won't know if these gasket issues have been addressed. It's a big gamble on a 17 year old car. HTH. -Jim
