Engine Sputter

Asked by Oct 26, 2013 at 02:36 PM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My wife has a 2004 Grand Am 3.4 Automatic with roughly 80,000 mi.. The car runs well but had developed an issue. When ever she drives up a hill the engine sputters and jerks. The car drives and shifts normal from start, its just when going uphill.
Just wondering where I would start with diagnosing this.

Sounds like the ignition system is breaking down under load. Check the coil packs and spark plug wires. This car actually doesn't need a tune up until 100,000 miles but if it's been tuned up already, using aftermarket parts, I'd suspect spark plugs too. HTH. -Jim
