2002 Pontiac grand am

My 2002 grand am started making a rattling
sound at the top of the engine. It does it
when I start the car and it sounds like
sething is loose maybe but I'm no car expert.
I'm afraid to drive it. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Try to listen and isolate where the rattle is coming from. Could be something very simple to fix. Open the hood, put your head close (without allowing any hair or clothing or jewelry to get caught in a belt or pulley), and have someone else start the car. If you can hear the noise, try to get a better idea of where it is coming from (driver's side rear of engine, passengers side front of engine, center of engine, etc) and let us know, please.
