whats the defference between a gt and se? i need a side mirrior and found one but it says it fits a gt. Will it fit a se also?

GT's had 6cyl engines and SE's had 4cyls. Probably some other options. Probably the same mirror. Ask the seller if it will fit both, usually they would know, or ask for picture to compare. www.ebaymotors.com has a few for sale with pics.

Not an answer but, I have a 2001 SE with a 3.4 V6.

99-01 Grand Am side mirrors are all physically the same. In other words, GT or SE from any of these years will fit, according to parts book. However: make sure the replacement has the correct options: Power/manual, heated/unheated, or folding/non-folding. Some features were standard on the GT and optional on the SE.
