Battery or alternator

Asked by BinxX Sep 28, 2016 at 12:47 PM about the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

If I put my key in the ignition and hear a click every
time I try to turn it on but it doesn't attempt to crank
, what could my problem be ... I gave the battery a
jump and it stayed on for 3-4 minutes and that was
it without giving it a jump it's completely out.

Take it to your auto parts store. The battery should be the first to be tested. If there's not much of a charge in it then have them slow charge it over night.

Charge battery and check battery cables for corrosion and make sure they're tight.

First you need to make sure you have 12 volts on the battery, if you do then your starter relay may be bad, if that checks ok then I would look at the starter being no good..
