Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hey guys 2000 grand am 2.4. I have a constant
grinding noise from the motor and I've been told it'
could be the timing chain rubbing the guides but Iif
that was the case I figured the sound would
change during acceleration? It's a constant
grinding, cold/hot accel/decel in any gear driving
or at idle. Any help would be awesome thank you
guys

It is hard to say from your description. What part of the engine is the noise coming from? Front of the engine, top, or bottom.

I would definitely say the front, not as noticeable when inside the car but louder than u could imagine outside

Ok, I would take the serpentine belt off and start the car to see if the noise is still there, If the noise is not there anymore with the belt off, then there is something wrong with one of the pulleys, water pump, or belt tensioner. If the noise persists at the front of the motor then determine if it is coming from the timing chain.

So ive narrowed it down to the AC compressor, theres metal shavings on both sides of the pully for it. Is it something i can bypass or does it need to be replaced

So that would be the AC compressor pulley bearing. That is easily replaceable. http://www.carid.com/2000-pontiac-grand-am-air-conditioning-heating-parts/four-seasons-ac-compressor-clutch-63186556.html ......You may be able to get these parts at your local parts store. I do have a sight to order a bypass pulley so you could eliminate the AC compressor if you like.
