Your Grand Am uses a transponder key. The key must be programmed to the car. Is this a new key? If so, use a working key to start the car. Shut off the car then immediately insert the new key and turn the ignition to the run position. Do NOT try and start it! Wait for the security light to go out. Turn off the ignition and then start the car. If this is the key that you've always used the problem is most likely the anti-theft module in the steering column. HTH. -Jim
