It will last as long as you want to spend money keeping it running. A 1997 Grand Am with 47K miles means it's been sitting for a long time. Have a mechanic go over the car to see what things need changing. I would change all filters and fluids as soon as you can. Inspect the tires, and all rubber hoses and brakes.
