What does it mean when the theft system light goes on? Is this something to be concerned about and/or needs to be repaired?

Asked by Dec 03, 2015 at 06:24 PM about the 1997 Pontiac Grand Am 2 Dr GT Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It doesn't stay on consistently & my car starts & runs with the light on.  Sometimes the light comes on & other times it doesn't light up.

Telling you the security system is on, it turns off when the car is started with the key. The light should go out when the car is turned on with the key.

Sounds like a problem is developing with the anti-theft module in the steering column. Sooner or later it won't recognize your transponder key and it will shut down the car. HTH. -Jim
