Crankshaft pulley


Asked by Oct 17, 2016 at 11:05 AM about the 1999 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 4 Dr Limited SUV

The crankshaft pulley or harmonic balancer
pulley has went out and has an awful
wobble when it spins I removed all of the
belts and the fan to get to it but can not
get the bolt to come out all it does is turn
the motor over what do I do now.

Shops will sell or rent the special balancer /pulley removal tool.


You need to remove one of the spark plugs and, using an adapter and an air compressor, fill one of the cylinders with compressed air. About 100 PSI should be enough to prevent the engine from spinning while you remove the bolt. HTH. -Jim

Sometimes you can remove the starter and get a big screwdriver or similar wedged against the starter ring gear to prevent the engine from turning so you can take out the bolt. Also if you have room an pneumatic impact wrench will remove the bolt easily.

It's basically an adapter that you screw into the spark plug hole and then plug your air compressor hose on to the adapter. Your local auto parts store should have one. HTH. - Jim
