Sound,s like a fuel issue, check the fuel pressure with the car warm, may be fuel pump getting hot and shutting down.

If you smell gas, there may be a leak, and loosing pressure, may not even be the pump, going bad, that would explain hard to crank issue, you can rent a fuel pressure guage at part,s store, they will return the money to you win you return it,that way it don,t cost you anything to use it,fuel pressure will reveal a leak issue all so,but if you are not familuar with fuel checking issue,s,you may want to have some one check it for you that has this expereince,go have it checked as soon as possilble,if you smell fuel it is leaking from somewhere, and could cause a fire.
