104,000 miles.... the fluid was very low, it will go in
gear but barely moves. I added fluid and it's doing
the same thing.... should I seek new tranny or just
try and strain it?

If the fluid was very low, you had a leak and burned up the transmission. No amount of new fluid will help. Time for another trans or vehicle.
Strain it? Probably time for a new transmission. Was the fluid on the dipstick still bright pink or was it a brownish red? Burned fluid is a bad sign.
