with regurds to a code p0430, if the catalyst converter was bad wouldn't cause a poor exceleration issue. the same as a blockage in an exhust system

Yes you are correct about the cats, but a P0430 is usually caused by an exhaust leak or a bad O2 sensor. If no leak is found, test the O2 sensors to see if they are reporting the proper voltage and if not replace.
