Where is the reverse light switch on a 1992 Lincoln Town Car? If no switch, how does one trouble shoot non-working reverse lights (bulbs NOT the issue)??

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1992 Lincoln Town Car Hearse.  The reverse lights have been re-
located by the factory & inset into the rear bumper.  The reverse lights no
longer work (the reverse bulbs are good (bench tested), there is no voltage
at the connector before the reverse light assembly.  This Town Car DOES
have the AOD Trans & cannot find a "black box" on the steering column.  I
cannot find a listing for the reverse light switch (checked several parts
stores), & cannot find anything on the lower steering column that would
resemble a reverse switch. Trans mounted maybe????  Thank You

They call it the nuetral safety switch not the backup light switch, with the AOD most of them were tranny mounted, but as it was a conversion it is really hard to say if that is where it was kept. If you look under the vehicle on the drivers side of the tranny right where the lever for the gear selector attaches you should see a metal half moon shaped switch held on by two small bolts in some slotted holes, it slides over the shift shaft for gear selection, and adjusts slightly to get the selection right. If it is not there, you might check for a small black plastic/metal half moon shaped unit attached to the steering column approximately 3 inches up the column from the firewall, it should have a couple of vacuum lines and a wiring harness to it, it won't look like a black box.
