Misfires are due to a poor spark or fuel. Most times it's the spark plugs, or could be the wires. When we're they changed last? If you don't know, replace the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor and see if the condition goes away. Start with the easy things first.

We changed the plugs only. It has coil packs so there are no wires or distributor cap

No cap, no rotor, no wires, no coil packs..If it is a 1997 lincoln mark VIII this vehicles uses a coil on plug (COP) ignition design. The individual coils one on each plug fail after time..Clear the codes on the EECIV computer with a low cost code reader. Confirm the missing has stopped. Don't guess.
