Speedometer works fine if I accelerate up to highway speed and maintain that speed
(as checked against my phone speed ap). However, if I do much stop and go driving
the speedometer begins to "ratchet" so that it becomes 5, 7, 10, 15 mph above the
actual travel speed. If I stop the speedometer will read the same (5, 7, 10, 15 mph).
If I restart within say 30 seconds it will still be high, but if I wait a couple of minutes
and then start, I can watch the speedometer move to zero and the speedometer will
read fine initially and then we start the process all over again. I believe that the
odometer is reading correctly.
Sounds like the stepper motor for the speedometer is sticking. Unfortunately you'll probably have to replace the whole instrument cluster to fix it. I'd have a shop plug into it with their scan tool to check the vehicle speed sensor. But if the odometer is reading correctly I doubt it's the speed sensor. HTH. -Jim
