My 96 Lexus ls400 ran out of gas and when I put some in it would crank like normal then cut off when I try to give it gas

Check the fuel filter,and possible pump may have trash in it all so.

What do I need to do to get the trash out of the fuel pump

You will have to drop fuel tank,and remove pump to clean sock filter on pump.
