Sends a signal back to the ECM as to the position of the throttle plate in the throttle body on you car. Basically nothing more than a rotary rheostat, each wind of the wire making a different ohm reading.

tennisshoe is right it is a sensor to tells the computer where the throttle is at so it can add more or less fuel. Rowefast i think you are talking about a IAC idle air control or idle control motor. it cusses a vacuum leak to step up the rpm so is not to kill the motor when your ac is on or you drop the throttle fast

Right the IAC is the idle controller, it has nothing to do with adjusting the idle speed, it is just a rheostat.
