Broken compressor after valve gasket repair-coincidence?

Asked by Feb 21, 2014 at 12:43 PM about the 2000 Lexus GS 400 RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Lexus GS400 (150k miles). I brought it in due to a burning smell, and the mechanic found that the valve cover gaskets were leaking oil onto the exhaust, so he replaced and removed both valve cover gaskets. From the second I drove the car away, the A/C light was blinking, which indicates that the compressor was broken. I had him take another look and now he says the compressor IS broken but that it is not due to any of the valve gasket repairs. The timing just seems suspicious. Is it possible that this is truly a coincidence or could something have happened in the valve gasket repair that would have broken the compressor?

A/C compressors don't fail that often. It might just be bad timing. The gaskets have nothing to do with the A/C. Without seeing/working on the car, I can't comment on what the mechanic did.
