So the light came on and you continued to drive and then the engine seized or did you pull off the road right away? You might have lost oil pressure and or had no oil in the engine and it seized. So you need a new engine. Unless the car is in immaculate shape, cost wise, I consider selling. IT's worth about $5K. See if you can find a used engine, save you some $$$. I'd check the oil at least once a week on an older car, don't rely on the dash warning lights.

If the red oil light was on and you were still driving it, then yes, I would say the motor is definetly destroyed. Also, if the red oil light suddenly came on and then the motor stopped then again yes, I would say the motor is destroyed. A used motor installed should cost you $2500 to $4000 depending on the mileage of the motor you are replacing it with and the mechanic you get to install it. If the car is in great shape, then I would invest the money, but if it has seen better days, then I would just invest the $2500 to $4000 in a different car.
