How do I know if I need to replace struts on 2000 ES300, it bottoms out over a speed bump going slow with 4 people in the car!
Then I'd say it's time. Do you have over 75000 miles?
Struts stop the oscillation of the up and down suspension travel after you have hit the bumps. the coil springs actually suppose the weight of the vehicle. So if it bottoms out the springs may be weak. If you jounce the car stationary and the car takes more than 2 rebounds to stop, then it probably needs struts.
Personally, having driven new/loaner Lexus from service department, they are just spring softer. Our Honda on the other hand is much firmer.
It has 117,000 miles on it and I have always had a great ride but now when I hit bumps with just me (115lbs) it is like being in a truck. When I push down using my hand I can get it to bounce. One mech says yes it needs them, one says no ....I bought it new and love it, never had any problems. It doesn't have electronic struts and that's good $400 each but still not cheap !
