O/D (Overdrive) Off Indicator Light

Asked by Karo Sep 03, 2015 at 10:28 AM about the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: General

I believe the O/D light should stay in the lighted position, but my son is telling me that it should be off unless I need extra power on the road.  If it's lit, doesn't that mean the overdrive is NOT engaged? I hope I am not running around town with the overdrive constantly engaged. My owner's manual says "This light will illuminate when the O/D button has been selected....duh. But should it be on or off for regular day-to-day driving???

You don't get more power with the overdrive on, it is for gas mileage out on the highway. When the overdrive is on the light should be on. Otherwise the light is off. I feel it is best to have the overdrive off when town driving, up to 50 mph so the trany is not lugging.

On my 01 GrandCherLar the light comes on when the OD is off. LIght says, "OD off". What I'd like to know is-is is possible to manually put it back on? Driving on interstate electronic OD went off. There were some slopes but when it got flat again it stayed off. Tried the OD button on gear shift. Watched the OD light stay on and the fuel gauge go down...?!?!?!

On my 1995 if the lights on then OD is on when the lights off OD is off. I can tell because when my jeep hits about 60 mph it want shift with OD turned on but when OD is off it shifts like it should.
