Thoroughly check underneath the vehicle paying attention to the drive train components. I've heard of this issue in the past with this model. Make sure there is nothing hanging, rubbing, banging, or scraping against the drive shafts, axles, transfer case, etc.. If I remember correctly someone had a similar situation and found something was rubbing against their drive shaft. A cable assembly of some sort.
On an older jeep it could be the front differential? Very common.
The viscous coupler in the transfer case is bad, if its a quadratrac. Its very common for those to go out, I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee same thing happened.
