My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo makes binding noise and is hard to turn in tight spots eg carparks it has a whining noise in the rear while driving
Change transfer case fluid, remove differential cover and remove and and all metal shavings, refill. As for the whining noise, you may be referring to the noise the 42RE is known for. (not a malfunction, just an attribute)
rear end is locking and can be bad during sharp cornering. Inspect the rear differential by taking the cover off and look for anything out of place or locking both sides together. To see if it's locked together, jack up the rear end with both wheels off the ground, then while in neutral spin one wheel and the other shouldn't turn. If it does it should only slightly.
