Overheating

Asked by Chris Aug 01, 2017 at 06:00 PM about the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my jeep grand Cherokee Laredo v8 5.2 Lt keeps
overheating and I already replaced the thermostat
and radiator. Any suggestions on what might be
the problem?

Check cooling fans to make sure they're coming on by turning on, if they are, check to make sure coolant is actually circulating through the radiator. If it's not, you may have a restriction or a bad water pump

The 3 wire connector between the radiator fan and the car's wiring harness corrodes and creates a poor intermittent connection causing the fan to not run. As long as the car is in motion, it will cool just fine but with it stopped and no fan it quickly overheats. It is difficult to clean. Cut off both ends and replace it with a 4 wire trailer light extension cable from Wally World for about five bucks.

Also, you can wiggle the connector and the fan will turn back on many times, but don't count on it staying on. Electrical connector spray cleaner is worthless to fix the problem.

I've been having the same problem first it was my one of the two fans that was it running I got that running by power washing my radiator and it started doing it about 2 months later. so today I replaced my radiator cap with a failsafe one and so far so good it's running and not over showing it's going to overheat.
