Jack it up, just enough to get tire off ground, and put your hands on top and bottom of tire and wiggle it.. It should have no movement. Doing the same thing from sides is different, there could be play in steering, but not much. And please, do not have your feet/legs under car doing this. Also, it may have a sound that does not seem right, a grinding sound, and tires wearing unevenly

And if it's front. you will probably feel vibration in steering wheel

My answer is exactly the same as the rest of the great answers you already got. Should be around a $200 fix if it didn't go too far..
