I have an 06 Honda Pilot and it has 263,000 miles on the engine. Trying to decide whether to change the timing belt or just buy a new car when it goes. The job will be about a $1,000.

First of all get another opinion on that price, that seems really high, and don't wait until it fails before you have it done, doing that will increase the cost dramaticly, as far as is it worth it, that can really be only answered by you and the actual condition of the vehicle and if your ready for more payments for another vehicle. If the unit is in great shape, no damage and everything works then go ahead and do the job, maintaining it just too see how long it will keep going, however if it's blowing blue smoke, using oil, things aren't working, it's beat up, then maybe it's time to move on. I have seen vehicles that have had 500000 miles on them and look and ran great, just cause they were taken care of and I have seen ones that have had less than a 100000 that are ready for the scrap yard. Condition is everything when deciding to fix it or unload it.
