Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2006 honda element ex is shifting hard and the Honda dealership says I
need a $5.000.00 new transmission, what else can I do to make it better
without replacing the tyranny? 84,000 miles

I'd get a second or third opinion. Try a local mechanic and a local trans shop, not a chain.
