My 91 Honda CRX si Dies and won't start

So exiting the freeway she stalled, then I
started her back up, and she sputtered and
was making lil backfire noise not loud but
almost, so I rev'ed it up good and she ran
about 3 blocks, Then idled low and then
died, I pulled over in a lot and a lil bit of
smoke rolled out and the engine was hot,
but the tac said normal,,, I ask some folk
and they said Alternator died... Not sure
that the problem, can anyone help me
figure this one?
Battery and wires are new and New Muffler
Old Cat... lots of Rattle going on down
there too.

Alternator for sure can do this, I happen to come across this thread sorry its been so long. But if anybody else sees it it may help them out too, and if you fixed this issue please let us know what had to be fixed thanks
