When empty do I fill the coolant resivoir with coolant?

Asked by Oct 01, 2014 at 03:57 PM about the 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Extended Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Had an oil/lube done yesterday and told it was empty (not radiator, just reservoir) - Kwik Kar Lube did not have coolant to put in so will do it myself but need to be sure I am doing the correct thing...

if you have some if it says 50/50 it is mixed if not mix it 50% waterr and 50% coolant and your reservoir should have a cold fill and a hot fill line on it fill it to the cold fill line its ok if its a little above it but not to the hot line because your ENGINE WILL OVERHEAT

If it was really empty, run the car up to temp after filling the reservoir to the "cold fill" line. If the level does not rise to the "Hot Fill" line, more coolant should be added to bring it up. Then let the car cool for an hour or two and do it again. (PS - filling it to the "Hot Fill" line when the engine is cold will not overheat your car. It may cause coolant to spill out the top as the car heats up but it cannot cause the car to overheat.)
