calif smog legal engine swap upgrade

what do you think would be the easiest engine to swap my 1990 gmc sierra
k1500 with, concidering its going to have to pass the origanal smog test .

You could install a newer engine if you made the emissions system fully functional for the year engine. After a swap you would have to go to a smog referee to have your truck certified. I would do a lot of research before doing the swap.
