2003 gmc envoy xl 4x4, gears not engaging

my 2003 gmc envoy xl, 4x4, 6 banger has been a
great car. took it to work and the gears would
not engage. its not a broken shifter cable. i can
move shifter, but the car will not move. i had to
disconnect the driveshaft just to move it from a
parking lot tp tow it. the vehicle will not roll in
neutral. i have no codes showing. a local grease
monkey told me its a bad transfer case and or
its motor. i have already replaced transmission
fluid and filter and i dont think its te selenoids
since i am not showing any codes. any help ?

so if you replaced trans filter and fluid what was the contamination in the trans pan ?

no slush no metal shavings. just a bit dark. vehicle has 220k miles. most highway miles. i never towed anything with her.
