Smoking transmission

I have 1991 ford ranger xlt 4x4 2.9L 5speed I was on my way home from work and she started smoking from the transmission  I pulled over quickly so what happened I still have gears 1thur3 but no 4th or 5th

You probably have a major leak and low on fluid, and you burned up the trans. Rebuild time.
