reverse gear failure

Try to back car up. Right rear wheel seizes up to the point of lifting car. Afraid I'll
burn the clutch if I force it.

your car is frontwheel drive. you have a rear brake/bearing problem.

sounds like the rear breaks are the problem

Fix the rear breaks, something is loose. Prolly a broken retainer spring.
