Asked by Dec 14, 2013 at 10:24 PM about the 1991 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XL 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I BOUGHT MY EXPLORER USED AND THE 4 X 4 HAS NEVER WORKED.  IT IS THE DASH PUSH BUTTON TYPE.  IS THERE A POSSIBLE SIMPLE FIX?                           I AM NOT SURE IF IT IS XL OR XLT.

The most common problem with these is the transfer case shift motor, sometimes lightly tapping on the motor while someone is pushing the 4X4 switch will make it work but not for long, if that don't work then you will have to run a diagnostic test on the shift module unit.
