2003 pt cruiser starts jerking and turns off when ac is turned on. Also smokes comes out from under hood, what is wrong with it?

possible seized compressor...would make a dandy bit of noise as the belt burns~ so not absolutely certain but would kill the engine...as it is the compressor already is using 28 percent of your horsepower up...so this is a fairly hungry for power goodie as it is...when perhaps the belt was too tight....the bearings crying for lubrication...and seizes....with the a/c switched off...no problem is what I'm guessing....get the a/c serviced...is my advise~
