Need to have someone scan the TCM for transmission trouble codes. This will help narrow down the potential issues.

Check your electrical connections beginning at the battery and then at the underhood fuse box. From there check the connections at the transmission. Apparently there's a connector at the underhood fuse box that's secured by a bolt. If this bolt loosens up the connection will be lost and that code will come up. This is because the computer doesn't know what gear (Park, Reverse, etc.) you're in with that connector loose. HTH. -Jim

It is the transmission range sensor or what most people call the neutral safety switch needs replaced on the transmission. Easy and not expensive.

listen to tuff4x4. The switch is the most common problem. It's digital meaning that the computer is looking for a specific resistance in a specific gear and doesn't see it. BTW - in 30 years of being a ford tech, I've never seen a connector with a bolt through it loosen up. Unless someone left it that way.
