New Engine or Better alternative.

Asked by Feb 17, 2015 at 01:47 PM about the 2002 Ford Taurus SES

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 ford taurus ses. I recently took it to a shop because the car is shaking
especially at a stop light. if i sit at the light too long my yellow check engine light
starts to blink and the car starts to shake really bad. when i pull off from the light the
car takes off really slow like i am barely pressing on the gas but in reality im flooring it.
When i took it to the shop the said its a cylinder 5 misfire and the compressor in the
cylinder is bad and that i would need a new engine which would be 1800. Could there
be another way to fix this problem. Could it possibly be a fuel injector.

No, with low compression you've either got a valve problem or a piston ring problem on that cylinder. How low is the compression? If it's very low or zero it's going to be a valve problem. If it's low enough to make the cylinder not fire, but will come up if about a teaspoon of motor oil is added to the cylinder then it's the piston rings. If it's a valve problem you need to have the head rebuilt. Parts and labor will be around $1500.00. If it's piston rings then the engine is pretty much worn out. HTH. -Jim
