my 2002 ford focus SE will not go in to reverse why?

My 2002 ford Focus se will have no reverse when I try to back up unless I revel it up then it keeps in and goes fine all other gears work fine it only 110,000 miles on it and is automatic tranny what will cause this and how could I repair it?  any help would be a great help because my dad who works on cars have no idea what is going on with it

Might be internal to the transmission if the linkage is OK.
