Same 4.6 engine from another explorer of the same year would work. What you have to concern yourself with is the PCM. Other motors within a year or two may bolt up but you may have to reprogram the PCM for the different engine. You will also have to make sure you have all the electronic connections and sensors peculiar to the donor engine and the corresponding plug in on your vehicle.
I understand that but is there another ford engine that can be used like a expedition or f150 of the same year or earlier.
OK. I have a 2003 ford explorer. It came with a 4.0 V6 SOHC engine.
The 4.6 and the 4.0 were the only two engines offered in Explorer models that year. The 5.0 may work if it was coupled with the 5 speed OD tranny.
