check engine codes

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4 4.6L. I have 3 codes that came up for inspection. I bought the truck not knowing about these codes as the seller must have taken the check engine bulb out. The codes are P0420, P0430, and P0405. Can anyone help with a good place to start with repair for inspection and emissions?

You have an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) problem for sure, P 0402 and 0405 are both EGR faults. Could simply be dirty, clogged, than again could be much more to it than that. Now P0430 is a different animal, has to do with cat. Catalytic Convertor ................ See:

For future reference the check engine light should come on if you put the ignition in the run position but do not start the engine. Hope that helps for future vehicle buying. -Jim

420 says bank 1 and 430 says bank 2. And I did know about the check engine light going on when you start the car, I just forgot. 3000 mistake
