what should he do so as to assure it passes smog? he never takes bronco on freeways, does that matter?

Doesn't matter that he doesn't drive on the highway. Make sure the car is running optimally before taking it in, and the cats are on the vehicle as they also do a visual inspection. If he fails, we can suggest some things to look at.

Take it out on the interstate and give it a good romping,by that I mean jump on the gas pedal,get up to 50mph and then give her a little more.Do that a few times that'll help clear the system out so she breathes better. Hope that helps =)
