Outside door handle not operating correctly

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the window glass in the drivers side door and in the process, loosened the latch mechanism for the door. After putting it all together again, I realized I had pulled the rod from the outside handle out of the latch, and it was no longer connected. So...I took it all apart again, got the rod back into the top of the mechanism where I thought it should go (mainly by feel, as you can't see in there). Now it unlatches the door to the midway point...that is is opens about the 1/2 inch, and is still latched. Any idea where I went wrong on this (other than loosening the latch in the first place :-) and how to get it right  ?

It sounds like your reattached it in/on the wrong place or you may have bent the latch mechanism or the linkage.

Yes, I had this problem before, you just need to reattach it to the correct part of the plastic mechanism and you should be fine. It's a pain trying to get in to it and I never did fix the one on my '89 Buick.
