Noise from rear of truck
I have 04 Silverado 1500 base ext cab it has split
shaft and when I have anything heavy in the bed or
i go over a hill and the back end squats it makes a
humming sound. It sounds like tires but I can hear
the tires and its not the same. I've been told u
joints or there's a bearing in the middle of the split
shaft. It's fine without a load. I feel like the back
has been lowered or I really need new shocks
because its very stiff. I haven't really investigated
its been lowered but either way I want to fix this
without changing out a bunch of stuff I don't need.
The humming also vibrates some.
Pull the drive shaft and check the u-joints. They should have free movement. If they are stiff, or have play in them then a u-joint would be bad. Check the carrier bearing for noise & play by spinning it, look for obvious damage.
Maybe your rear springs are sagging a bit and you may need new shocks but remember that 1/2 ton pickups really can't carry much weight without over loads. Have the truck put up on the rack to check out the center bearing.
Well I'm talking 300 lbs maakes it sound like its something major and take the 300 lbs out and its fine
300 pounds is nothing. The truck should not squat at all and if it does there is something wrong with the springs.
Got under it and its not been lowered its stock. And I twisted and pulled on drive shaft the only movement is at the carrier bearing and its very minimal. If that's not the problem the rear end is all that's left
I have overloaded mine in the past to the point where the driveshaft pushes too far up into the transmission and it will definitely make a noise when it does that
