2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.8 my gear shift is stuck in drive and handle moves freely

Sounds like the problem is in the steering column. You should be able to climb under the truck and manually push the linkage (found on the driver's side of the transmission) up into park. HTH. -Jim
