2002 base silverado trans

When i drive it slips in third and fourth. It
stopped shifting completely yesterday.
Today i start it up and put it in reverse and it
worked. But i dont want to get stuck on
theside of the road. Any suggestions? I can
repair it myself if i know the problem

This is a computer controlled transmission and they do have problems, I would take it to a good tranny shop and get it checked out, it may just be the solenoids need replacing, that is a common problem, a few dollars spent now can save thousands later.
