Can I weld the drive shaft on a 2001

Any mods to the drive shaft need to be done by a shop that specialized in driveshafts.

Like Tom said, balancing of a driveshaft is very important. Welding would put weight in different areas of the diameter and make this thing spin unbalanced making a racket and potentially falling off.
