3.43 vs 3.73 rear end gear

Asked by Sep 05, 2016 at 12:35 AM about the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS Ext Cab Short Bed 2WD

Question type: General

Would the 373 gear be too much for my truck with a 4.8 engine?
I commonly pull a 6x12 open trailer or 18ft bass boat.

no...the 3.73 is fine...more tq..but less top end..and you dont need top end...do you have the 3.43 in it now..i think you do ? and then theres the speedo gear to mess with unless you figure out 60mph is now really 70mph on the speedo

The 373 gears would be just fine for what your pulling, just remember the engine will climb onto its torque curve sooner so you might break loose tires if you get on it too soon out of the hole, and towing something would not be good. I'm running 373 gears in my rig and if the pavement is just a little bit damp it will spin the tires just for an instant then the trackloc grabs it.

I'm wanting to change gears because when towing these light loads my truck has a hard time maintaining hwy speeds, trans is constantly changing even with towing button pushed.

I bought the truck lifted and with 35" tires on it but whoever put them on left the 3.08 rear ends in it and those gears are too tall. need to either change gears or find a couple used rear ends.
